Little Gods: Orion and the Cosmological Constant, a new performance workshop by Baby Copperhead with visuals by Brian Zegeer
Benjamin Brian Lee AKA Baby Copperhead is a New York City-based banjo player, guitarist, and composer. While building on his “otherworldly” folk roots, Lee explores a broken dissonant America, gathering repressed elements from our cultural past — the banjo’s African origins, polyphonic borrowings from 16th century European sacred music, avant-garde improvisations — combined with modern electronics, samplers, and handmade circuit-bent instruments.
Baby Copperhead’s collaborations include works with Eugene Chadbourne, Michelle Dorrance, Ed Askew, and Room 21 with Jace Clayton (aka DJ/rupture) at the Barnes Collection in Philadelphia, a project that demonstrates Baby Copperhead’s ongoing interest in exploring the nexus of European classical, North African, and Central American traditions through the prism of folk music and pop culture. His other projects are: The Zolephants, a proto-plasmic-surf-punk-spaghetti-western instrumental electric trio; and Baby Copperhead with strings, featuring Tom Swafford on violin, Jessica Pavone on viola, and Brent Arnold on cello.

In The Fold : Silent Thoughts

Notes from the Artists:
Ryan Keberle – In the Fold : Silent Thoughts is a solo musical performance that combines pre-composed and improvised music created to juxtapose with Mr. Nussear’s visual and physical stimuli. The music looks to highlight the similarities, differences, and interdependence found in and between the visual and aural experience.
Just as Mr. Nussear’s work can be viewed from multiple angles and perspectives, so to can the relationship between visual and sonic art, especially when both senses are stimulated simultaneously. Moments of transition from visual stimuli in silence to concurrent visual and musical stimuli are of particular interest.
Musical influences that I might draw from in the creative process include a variety of inspiration ranging from Ravel to Celia Cruz to Radiohead.
Caleb Nussear – The visual component of In the Fold : Silent Thoughts is a semi-private durational performance / installation founded on the antique technology of slide projection. For this project I have paired with Mr. Keberle to create a complex music as an experience of space. The music incorporates visual material – the projected found images – to catalyze or allow this spatial experience.
Utilizing my extensive collection of personal and found 35 mm slides, I have placed hanging screens within the Triskelion theater. Using mobile projector tables I will change the angle of projection during the performance, thus changing the lines of perspective and superimposition of the images.
Audience members are invited to move about the front of the stage carefully during the performance and view the evolving slide image narrative from various points. The performance is designed to be viewed from multiple angles.
My collection includes approximately 400 images culled from various sources — personal photos taken by myself and friends during urban walks of various U.S. cities in the last decade — found slides of early performances held at PS1 — touristic images of various European capitals — map slides — advertising imagery — art historical images — excellent donations from artists — and various miscellany.
