Josh Sinton presents: “b.” Album Release Concert - featuring Sam Newsome.

  • Ibeam Brooklyn 168 7th Street Brooklyn, NY, 11215 United States (map)

Baritone saxophonist celebrates his first solo saxophone release “b.” with a pair of solo concerts and one duo concert. Joining him for the duo concert and performing one of the solo concerts will be the great soprano saxophonist Sam Newsome.

Named 2020’s “Rising Star” on the baritone saxophone in Downbeat’s Critics Poll, Sinton spent many years meditating on the possibilities of his first solo saxophone album. “b.” is a unique document consisting of nine improvised solo pieces. The pieces have clear and unique structures that owe as much to the work of Alberto Giacometti and Nina Simone as they do to the pioneering work of Anthony Braxton, Evan Parker and Roscoe Mitchell.

Sam Newsome often works in the medium of solo saxophone, an approach for which he gained world-wide critical acclaim with his 2009 recording, Blue Soliloquy: Solo Works for Soprano Saxophone. Many of the notes and sounds used in his compositions and improvisations stem from his sound palette of extended techniques and saxophone preparations. Conceptually speaking, Newsome sees himself more along the lines of a visual artist who paints with notes and sounds rather than shapes and colors.

Sinton and Newsome will each play a solo set followed by a duo set. A first-time meeting for these two saxophonists!
