Based in New York, Thomas Morgan and Emi Makabe perform original compositions, jazz standards, and Japanese folk music.

Thomas Morgan is a New York-based jazz double bassist from the San Francisco Bay Area. Known for his telepathic synchronicity, melodic and expressive phrasing, precise touch, and amber sound, he has performed alongside a number of the most trendsetting artists in jazz, including Bill Frisell, Jakob Bro, Craig Taborn, Masabumi Kikuchi, Paul Motian, Dan Weiss, Jim Black, John Abercrombie, Dave Binney, Steve Coleman, Ethan Iverson, Aaron Parks, Fred Hersch, Charles Lloyd, Henry Threadgill, Joe Lovano, and Tomasz Stanko, among many others. He has released two duo albums with Bill Frisell—Small Town and Epistrophy—on ECM Records.

Emi Makabe is a composer, vocalist, and shamisen player. Originally from Japan, she has been based in New York since 2008. After graduating from the City University of New York, she began performing across New York, Europe, and Japan. Her quartet—featuring Vitor Gonçalves (piano), Thomas Morgan (bass), and Kenny Wollesen (drums)—has released two albums. Her second album, Echo (2025), released on Sunnyside Records, features guest appearances by Bill Frisell, Jason Moran, and Meshell Ndegeocello. Her debut album, Anniversary (2020), was released on Dave Douglas’s Greenleaf Music label.
