Daniel Carter - tenor, alto & soprano saxophones, flute, trumpet, clarinet
Eva Novoa - piano, synth & Chinese gongs

Daniel Carter is a legendary free jazz multi-instrumentalist, primarily known for his extensive work on saxophone, flute, clarinet, and trumpet, a prolific performer and composer deeply rooted in New York City's avant-garde scene since the 1970s, known for collaborations with artists like William Parker, Thurston Moore, and Sun Ra, and co-founding the influential 577 Records label.
Daniel Carter and pianist/composer Eva Novoa have been playing together and performing shows since 2021 with different lineups or bands. They recorded as a trio with acclaimed drummer Francisco Mela and from this project two releases have been released on the label 577 records, Novoa/Carter/Mela Trio Vol. 1 (2024) & Vol.2 The Freedom Suite (2025). DownBeat Magazine reviewed their Volume 1 in early 2025 and Phil Freeman wrote "joined by Daniel Carter on a multitude of wind instruments and Francisco Mela on drums and vocals, Novoa herself switches between piano and Fender Rhodes, strikes gongs and shakes percussion instruments, and even whistles. The thing about Novoa is, she's a born collaborator. The three long tracks on this album allow each musician to come to the fore at various times, with the other two offering heart-felt support. There's never a moment where the music is allowed to coast, and indeed, most segments are driven by raw passion, even though it's channeled into music that has enough discipline that it feels composed or at the very least the product of rehearsal and discussion. For example, although Daniel Carter is the only horn heard, his saxophone playing is free but meditative, while his trumpet playing has the subtlety of 50s Miles".
Together as a trio they have performed in NYC and in Boston. On this occasion Daniel and Eva are presenting their Novoa/Carter Duo, which they brought to the New York Forward Festival in Brooklyn in September 2023. Join us for a very special evening and duo music night.
